I'm moving!!!

Well people, I have good news and bad news... I like bad news 1st so here goes. I 'm moving from the Stowe building! I know, I know. It was hard to make the decision because I was one of the 1st to sign on with David and have been a major supporter. None of that changes cause David is a cool mofo and all.

The good news is that I'm only moving across the street to a suite above Main Street Books and the Grand Opening is set for January 9th. Woo Hoo!
I will post photos of the new space in a few days and you can see the renovation when you come to the opening. So the race is on to get things finished in time. I'll keep you posted on the progress.
Below is a pic of the front door of the new location. The address is as follows:

JG Smith premium denim & thread
126 South Main Street, suite 2A
Davidson, NC. 28036

Fleet Footed Jen?

I often get asked about who I'm going to have working in the store. Well, I've known Jen for quite some time. We met at the bus stop about a year and a half ago. We spent a few minutes everyday chatting about weather, the neighborhood, babysitters and such.
Well, after getting to know each other and talking about fashion I told her my plans to open a store I figured she would be great to work in the store. She's good with people, active in the community, and she's a mom. For those that don't know, I spend a lot of time making over moms, updating them with the classics and showing them how to spice it with trendy pieces.

So with no further hesitation, meet Jen!!!

If you build it, they will come...

I routinely walk the mean streets of Davidson in the wee hours of the night. To my surprise. At around 2am I came across the front of the building where the store is located, and saw a sign that took me a minute to figure out. I guess it's the equivalent to the "shock and awe" statement by G.W. Bush. Take a look and tell m what you think.

There's something about seeing my "chicken scratch" autograph that makes me proud to be a misfit!!!

Construction update #5

It's done! Finally. I'm waiting for new product and fixtures to come in. Gonna do some re-upholstery and refinish some older pieces I had for a while. Take a look at the finished product as well as the chocolate floor.

Raleigh Denim

After reading a few blogs I stumbled upon Raleigh Denim and immediately got on the phone. To my surprise, the designer actually called me back and we had a brief conversation about denim and the Carolinas. Maybe it's wishful thinking but in my mind if I use local designers or local manufacturers it can help keep food on someone's table. For instance, Raleigh Denim, based out of Raleigh, NC does just that. They use fabric from Cone Mills which is a well respected manufacturer of denim the world over. By using a local denim mill the workers have work to do, the designers can continue to make exceptional jeans, and I can continue to purchase denim for my clients. It's one of those "circle of life" things.
The denim is a bit pricey but thats what happens when you use high quality Carolina denim. Besides, I'm willing to do my part to keep unemployment down.

Check out the screen printed hip bones on the inside pockets.

I find it very sexy when a lady has a sleeve tattoo that's tastefully done.

For God so loved the world he gave us...

Finding quality men's clothing is quite the job. Men's clothing can be rather expensive but if you get something of considerable quality and craftsmanship it can last forever. Thank God for 3Sixteen. The double breasted Cardigan paired with the orange tie is a sure fire bet. The waxed trench coat is probably the coolest trench I've ever seen. Keep a look out for 3Sixteen coming to Davidson spring 2010

Every town has a resident psycho

Davidson is getting Psycho Bunny, a pretty cool line that I discovered about a year ago. I love the bunny and crossbones, it's like Bunnicula died and came back to haunt us! They have interesting ties and cufflinks, though a little pricey it's what will set you apart in a board meeting. The polos are cool. simple and clean like Lacoste just not all over the place like Lacoste. A little individuality goes a long way.
Below are a few pics of the line. I'm meeting with the rep next week for lunch next week and I'll place my order. Hopefully I'll have some new pics for your viewing pleasure.

Decisions, Decisions

Today I got the picture of what my sign is supposed to look like. I can't decide which one is the better on to choose. The white background is cool but it can also seem boring and I'm not too fond of the reddish border.
The black background makes the signature stand out more and it may look cool at night, but will it be hard to see at night?
I'm leaving this up to public opinion and putting it to a vote. Please take a look at the choices and let me know via email which one you like.

The Sign will go on the side of Stowe's Corner in Davidson.

I got jumped last night!

So here I am minding my own business last night. Out of nowhere comes a crazy baby waving her fists at me speaking some language I don't understand. After I woke up sore and bruised I called the police and they put out an A.P.B. "angry petite baby".
So a word to all my friends, please be careful and be on the lookout for angry babies! They're considered armed and dangerous!

"My waist is small and I get this gap in the back"

This has to be the biggest problem for curvy women. Jeans that fit the butt and thighs but not the waist. I think I found the solution. Take a look at the video and expect to see them in the store this fall.

More style

I'm pretty sure my mom hated that I watched these movies. Growing up in Detroit was all about style and having the cleanest (nicest) cars, and the dopest vines! Once again, I looked to the movies for inspiration.
Superfly was the man. Don't believe it? Watch how he clears the fence when he's going after his money!

Watch out for that truck!

People often ask me where I get my sense of style from. I can put my finger on one particular thing. I watched a lot of t.v. back in the day which shaped my sense of what I thought people should look like in their clothes. Stylish! I watched a lot of blaxploitation flicks when I went to my cousins house. I thought the action stars had the coolest clothes. Leather blazers, fedoras and some cool music while twisting a Lincoln Continental with suicide doors. Yessir, thats what I wanted to be. My mom had other plans... Take a look at the trailer for "Truck Turner" and get a glimpse into my warped mind.

I gotta get one of these!!!

Ok people, seriously. This has to be the worst commercial in 47 states( some states are known for foolishness). I saw this commercial the other day at around 3am and thought it was a joke or something. No such luck.

construction update #4

Ok, the drywall is up and 2 of the 4 windows are in. I'm still debating on leaving the ceiling raw and untouched, but adding a really cool light fixture. What do you think?

Did you know Dumbo is in Brooklyn?

I've been following a line of handbags for about a year or so. I first heard of Corrente Bags from a company called Showroom New York. Prior to my trip to New York I decided to give the designer a call and hopefully order some bags for the store. Surprisingly I got a hold of the designer Corrie who I later found has family ties to Cornelius, NC. Corrie and I decide that when I get to NY we would meet at Dumbo in Brooklyn. I didn't realize DUMBO, an acronym for Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass, I truly thought it was an entertainment complex for kids.
Upon meeting Corrie for Lunch I also got to meet a close friend of hers who happens to know the lead singer of the "Brunettes"!
After lunch we head over to Corrie's factory at the Brooklyn Naval Yard where she shows me some incredibly soft leather handbags. The interior of the bags are lined with beautiful fabrics that definitely add a nice touch. I ordered a number of bags from the fall line-up and definitely look forward to doing some projects with Corrie in the near future.
Here are a couple of pics for you to get a sneak peek, and you can view the previous collections here

A little press never hurt anybody!

I'm a little excited folks! I got a little blurb in the town paper about the store opening this fall. Trust me people, it's gonna be the "bidness" when it's done. Here's an excerpt from the article below.

Even as the 19,000-square-foot building nears completion, however, the lineup of tenants is still not complete.

Mr. Stewart will have an office in the new building, as will his wife, Betsy, who operates a self-storage company. Baybridge Management, a Davidson-based health care management company, also will move into the second floor, from its current offices in the Davidson Clinic building on Griffith Street.

Investors have bought the first-floor retail space, though they are still searching for a restaurant or retail tenant.

Others in the building will include a hair salon and a clothing boutique called jgSmith Premium Denim & Thread. Owner Jason Dunigan is lining up inventory, choosing fixtures and designing the layout of his small upstairs space. He said he’s “seeking new designers that can bring a cutting edge to the Davidson community, without stepping too far out of the box." And he’s working with a designer to develop his own line of men’s leather messenger bags.

“I’m really excited about the showroom/store opening this fall and being able to help customers find the right clothing to fit their style and persona,” Mr. Dunigan said in an email.

Remember this?

Some of my favorite MJ videos

The man, The myth, The LEGEND

I've run into a lot of guys actin' like they weren't Michael Jackson fans back in the day. Seriously people, Michael ruled the 80's! I had Michael Jackson buttons, posters, and I even had a homemade glove with silver sequins on it. Laugh and joke all you want, but truth be told, you had dreams of being Mike. Hell, every girl wanted to be Michael's girlfriend back then. Anyway, here's an old interview of Michael at the height of "Thriller."

Check the belt buckle!!!
Now that's Gangsta!

construction update #3

Here are some interior photos from the store. I spoke to one of the construction guys and he told me August may be when construction is complete. I have a big trip to Vegas for a few trade shows along with a "boys trip" at the same time in September. More than likely I'm gonna open after the travels are complete.

Anyway, I'm thinking of doing the floor in a polished concrete stain in dark chocolate. I want to suede the walls in a grey color accented with white and oversized picture frames in either pewter or black. My wife and I were going over color schemes today and she thinks the grey will look the best. Originally I wanted to use black and white but I thought it may be hard to pull off. Grey with black and white accents will probably work the best when paired with chrome and pewter hardware.

I have to say, I love the windows in my suite! 4 huge windows (9ft x 4ft) facing east and south. I don't think I'm gonna do any window coverings aside from tint which should cut down on summer heat. What's gonna be really cool is when 4th of July (my favorite holiday) rolls around next year. I may invite a few friends over to watch fireworks from the store. Being on the 3rd floor has its advantages! If I get a chance this weekend I'll take some pictures of the view from the suite so you can see whats happening in town.
